Panel: Digital health skills for a safe, effective aged care workforce

This panel will explore the digital health skill needs of the aged care workforce. Four thought leaders in the fields aged care and digital health workforce will examine current and future reform impacts on the workforce, and specifically the skill needs to support the safe practicing workforce. Participants will gain an understanding of current reforms, policies, strategies, and activities to address these skill needs and they can ways to contribute to a future that makes optimal use of a digitally skilled aged care workforce.



Panel: Community-centered computing education for women from marginalised communities to reduce health and education disparities

As the prominence of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM) education continues to grow, women, people with disabilities, and people from marginalized communities are significantly underrepresented in academic studies and careers in STEMM areas. The Latina presenters of this panel analyse the existing challenges and the common issues faced concerning women in these traditionally underserved groups in the Americas pursuing degrees in computing fields by sharing valuable strategies to attract and retain groups in technical health fields such as health informatics, biomedical data science, computational biology, and bioinformatics. They will share their experiences to motivate and encourage women to pursue technical fields in health and biomedicine by understanding and appreciating the unique cultural aspects inclusive to the group and the communities they serve.

Biography

Professor Kerryn Butler-Henderson is the Director of the RMIT University Digital Health Hub. She has several large-funded research projects evaluating digital health interventions in various health settings and digital health workforce research and leadership. Kerryn was recognized for her expertise with several national and international awards.

Biography

Dr Karen Day, FHiNZ, FIASHI, was a cofounder of the National Institute for Health Innovation at the University of Auckland, has been a digital health worker, and researches development of specialist digital health workers. She was a founding fellow of AIDH.

Patricia Ordóñez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Systems in the College of Engineering and Information Systems at UMBC. She is interested in clinical informatics, data mining, visualization, human-computer interaction, accessibility, and computing education for all.

Biography

Dr Carol Hullin, Innovating with the Centre of Latinoamerican Digital Innovation, doing global research in health informatics, especially online programs, and legal implications. She has over 25 years of global leadership in Health, Education, and Justice in the southern hemisphere between Oceania and Latino America. She focuses daily on applied research in the global industry on legal & ethical implications within vulnerable communities, such as family violence, and criminal youth environment, by protecting sensitive data and mechanisms for cybersecurity. She is part of the academic team of the Colleague of Economy & Business at the University of Tasmania, Australia. She works full-time as Data Governance Manager at the legal systems of the state of Victoria.

Biography

Dr Wanda Diaz-Merced is a blind post-doctoral astronomer who works in the South African Observatory. She developed a program called XSonify, which turns her astronomical data into sound, making it possible for her to do research. Diaz-Merced works on the internal structure of the star and in educational outreach for blind students.
