Workshop: Global lessons on how technology can support primary health care in remote communities

It is well known that access to comprehensive primary health care improves health outcomes (CPHC). Remote communities globally have a heavy burden of disease and sub-optimal access to primary care and present a complex, challenging environment in which to deliver services. This workshop will explore how digital tools and resources such as data, devices and telehealth can be optimally deployed in remote communities in a culturally appropriate manner to support CPHC. The workshop will draw on experiences and projects across Australia, Canada, Africa and Scandinavia and draw on expertise from clinicians, government leaders, technical experts, researchers and indigenous project leads.

Data and information learning objectives include:
  • Understand how we ensure data and information is accessible to clinicians and consumers to support integrated and multidisciplinary care
  • Explore how data can be shared in remote environments to support health and wellness
  • Explore how data related to social determinants of health can be integrated into health and wellness in remote communities
  • Identify how we can harness and evaluate data and information to improve our virtual care services in remote communities
Care design learning objectives include:
  • Explore how we merge traditional face to face clinical care with virtual care services in a way that supports better experiences for consumers and clinicians, and better value for our health systems
  • Identify how to embed primary health care principles into the way services are developed and delivered
  • Understand how we use technology to support innovative ways of delivering remote care such as the use of virtual navigators and remote monitoring
  • Detail how we can use technologies in a culturally appropriate way for people in remote communities including the use of co-design
  • Understand similarities and differences in approach to virtual care across four continents
Workforce capacity and capability learning objectives include:
  • Understand the digital health skills required by our future health workforce to support remote comprehensive primary healthcare
  • Explore extended scope of practice and new roles that can be supported through the innovative use of health technologies in remote care
  • Explore how different countries approach workforce challenges in remote care
