Panel: Empowering the community through co-designed, industry led research partnerships

Quality disability research requires the meaningful engagement of people with disability throughout the research process. Additionally, establishing enduring partnerships between service providers, researchers and end-users enhances the capacity to deliver empowering disability research. The Co-design Telepractice Research Project, a collaborative partnership between Rocky Bay (Disability Service Provider in WA) and Curtin University, is an example of how research, advocates and industry partners can work together using a co-design approach to produce tangible outcomes that translate into practice. Panel members will share their insights, learnings and experiences of how inclusive and participatory projects benefit the community in expected and unexpected ways.

Learning objectives:
  • Understanding how co-design principles of sharing power, prioritising relationships, using participatory means and building capacity can be utilised to enable meaningful collaboration with community
  • Strategies for shaping the role of a peer researcher and considerations from the perspective of lived experience
  • Advocating for co-design – expected and unexpected benefits of meaningful collaboration
  • Exploring reflections, lessons learned and finding avenues for support in the co-design journey
