Panel: Is digital aged care the solution?
Aged care, or Long-Term Care as it is known in some countries, is under great stress worldwide. Workforce challenges, increasing demand and increased acuity of care, including a rise in cognitive impairment have forced to industry to transform. Improved efficiency, quality and safety are critical elements going forward. Digital transformation is often suggested as the solution. In this panel session we will discuss with international experts what is the evidence that digital transformation is the solution, and what the sector needs to do to successfully implement digital transformation.
Learning objectives:
  • Understand the current status of aged/long-term care and its use of digital technology
  • Review the evidence on how digital technology has affected aged/long-term care
  • Develop a roadmap for the future use of digital technology in aged/long-term care based on evidence
  • Develop policies that support the development of the digital maturity of the aged/long-term care sector

Biography

Helen is a senior lecturer and researcher at the University of Tasmania's Australian Institute of Health Service Management; holds an adjunct research position at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne; and is an invited member of the Australian Digital Health Agency's clinical governance committee. She is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Digital Health and the vice chair of their Nursing and Midwifery informatics community of practice. Internationally, Helen represents nursing Informatics for Australia at The International Medical Informatics Association.

Biography

Renata is a strategist and advocate for digital transformation. She brings over fourteen years’ experience leading digital transformation and business improvement across complex programs within the higher education management and health care industries. Renata is driven to create change that facilitates positive user experiences for both workforce and consumers. By focusing on the positive experiences of the end user, Renata ensures her projects are both impactful and sustainable. In 2016, Renata successfully coordinated regional teams to deliver the Federal Government’s My Health Record opt-out trial in north Queensland. In 2021, she oversaw the development ‘Healthy Minds Healthy Lives’, a five-year mental health, suicide prevention and alcohol and other drugs plan for Darling Downs and West Moreton region. Renata is passionate about social change and equitable access to health care enabled through technological advancements.

Katie is a Physiotherapist with a passion for comprehensive geriatric assessment. She works as a Research Technician for CSIRO's AEHRC. Her clinical background and experience implementing the Smarter Safer Homes system in the homes of older adults give her a unique perspective on the practical considerations needed for successful implementation.

Dr Alexander has a broad background in human factors, informatics, gerontology, patient safety and quality measures. Dr Alexander is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, American College of Medical Informatics, and International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics. He has over 20 years of experience conducting nursing home research.
