Panel: Co-design of health informatics solutions with patients and community: State of the science and recommendationsCo-design encompasses a variety of frameworks, philosophies, methods, and approaches. In this panel we aim to enhance understanding of these principles and key methods, share the current state of the science including examples from research and practice, and facilitate discussion of interdisciplinary and international perspectives in the field.

Dr Katherine Kim is a health informatics researcher specializing in digital health, participatory methods, and community engagement. She is Co-Director of ACTIVATE, a community-co-designed platform for equitable and sustainable digital health implemented in underserved and rural communities, and Chair of the American Medical Informatics Association Consumer Health Informatics Working Group.

Liliana Laranjo has a background as a General Practitioner, having a Master of Public Health from Harvard University, and a PhD in Digital Health. She is a Senior Research Fellow at the Westmead Applied Research Centre, Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney. She has been awarded a NHMRC Emerging Leader Investigator Grant (2023-2027) and an Honorary Future Leader Fellowship from the National Heart Foundation. Her current research focuses on using digital health (smartphone applications, text messages, wearable and wireless devices, conversational artificial intelligence) to promote behaviour change, patient-centred care, and primary and secondary prevention of chronic conditions.

Ming-Yuan Chih, PhD, ACHIP, FAMIA is an associate professor at the University of Kentucky. With the training in Industrial Engineering, his research focuses on the use of Internet, telecommunication, and information technologies to extend care and support beyond the traditional healthcare settings. He currently co-leads a project to co-design and implement a mobile technology-enabled comprehensive connected cancer care (C4) program in rural Kentucky.

Christie L Martin, PHD, MPH, RN-BC, LHIT-HP, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing and a board-certified medical-surgical nurse at Allina Health in Minneapolis. Her research agenda aims to promote healthy behaviours and prevent chronic diseases through the co-design, implementation, and evaluation of accessible, culturally sensitive digital solutions that empower underserved and underrepresented individuals, families, and communities. Dr Martin is the Secretary of the American Medical Informatics Association Consumer Health Informatics Working Group.

Scott Sittig, PhD, MHI, RHIA, is an Associate Professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. His research area is in consumer health informatics with a focus in developing digital health solutions to promote patient engagement. Currently, Dr Sittig is working on a funded project to develop a just-in-time adaptive (JITAI) digital health solution to foster healthy habits for nursing student before graduation which may produce healthier, happier nurses and superior patient care in the future.
